Scholarship Information 

 Carolinas Nursing Endowment Scholarship – The Carolinas Nursing Endowment was established by an anonymous donor and today awards annually.  Donations are accepted to this fund on an ongoing basis.

Charles U. Mauney Scholarship – Charles Mauney, PhD, was the long time director of the Microbiology Dept. at CMC and a member of the Charlotte Pathology Group.  He was a lecturer in the School of Medical Technology.  This scholarship was established in Dr. Mauney’s memory in 1997 by his friends and colleagues. It has recently been supplemented by memorials for Dr. Mauney’s wife, Rebecca, who passed away in early 2002.

Connie Anderson “Class of 1951” Scholarship – This scholarship was founded in 2004 by a nursing alumnus of the class of ‘51 in grateful appreciation for what the college and her classmates had done to help the class stay in touch through the years.  She treasures her formative years and the lifelong friends she made while attending nursing school.  This award is presented to a nursing student who is fluent in a second language.

Elinor Caddell Alumni Scholarship – Elinor Caddell was in the first nursing class at the CMH School of Nursing. She later returned to teach for the school before moving on to UNC-Charlotte. This scholarship was set-up to honor Elinor by former classmates and students.  This scholarship is awarded to a Nursing student planning to pursue baccalaureate Nursing studies after graduating from CCHS. 

Friends of CMC Scholarship – Friends of Carolinas Medical Center is a volunteer organization which helps support the hospital by conducting special charity events. Proceeds from these activities were used to endow this scholarship.

George Tillery Scholarship – The George Tillery scholarship was created to honor the memory of COL George Gordon Tillery, career army aviator.  Its purpose is to provide financial support for an individual preparing for a career change after service in the military so preference is given to those with military service and to former pilots.

Harris Endowment Scholarship - The James J. and Angelia M. Harris Foundation funds  scholarships in Nursing and Radiologic Technology through an annual grant for an overall total of approximately $14,000 a year.  Mr. Harris was a long-time CHS Board member.  Together, through both their philanthropy and their service, the Harris’ have had an immeasurable impact on human services in the Charlotte area and beyond.

Hollandsworth Scholarship - The Hollandsworth Endowment was established in 1990 by Frances and Ray Shue in honor and loving memory of Ray’s step-father and mother, Ray and Rosemary Hollandsworth, both patients at CMC. This year’s awards total $4,500 and have been awarded to two Nursing students so that they may make a dramatic difference in the lives of patients and their families.

Irene G. Millroy Community Healthcare Scholarship – It was with great appreciation in 2005 that a gift was received from the estate of Irene G. Millroy, a longtime educator.  Seeking to be excellent stewards of the resource given to us, CCHS established the Irene G. Millroy Community Healthcare Scholarship.

Kathleen Revel Scholarship - This award was created in 2008 by Eve Hoover in loving memory of a strong, resourceful woman whose indomitable courage is an inspiration to all.  Each year, the award is presented to a 2nd year nurinsg student whose courageous career ambitions and outstanding achievements mirror Dr. Revels'.

Kathy Bruce "Core Valures" Scholarship - This award was created in 2008 and is awarded in honor of Ms. Bruce's co-workers and in memory of her sister, Shirley Ann Harrell.  It is awarded to a 2nd year student (2008-09 was 1st award) who embodies the core commitments and values of Carolinas HealthCare System.

Marilyn Gaffney Memorial Scholarship – This award was created in loving memory of Marilyn Gaffney, RN, by her family, friends, and colleagues.  Marilyn was the Director of Nursing at CMC-Randolph Behavioral Health Hospital before losing her battle with cancer in 2001.  This scholarship honors her long commitment to nursing and nursing education. 

Martha Brackett Rollins Scholarship – The Martha Brackett Rollins Scholarship was made possible by gifts from friends and family in memory of Mrs. Rollins, a 1963 graduate of the CMH School of Nursing.  She was not only a nurse who never lost her love for helping others, but she was also an accomplished marksman, businesswoman, and entrepreneur.  Martha was a devoted wife to Paul and a loving daughter and sister.  In addition to her CMH education, she graduated summa cum laude from Pfeiffer University. She was Director of Nursing at Mecklenburg Health Care and later worked with the HART unit at Hospice of Charlotte. She was stricken with cancer and, after a courageous battle, passed away in 2003. The Martha Brackett Rollins Scholarship was founded in 2004.

Nancy and Jim Hill Scholarship –This scholarship was awarded for the first time in 2008-2009.  It was established in honor of Nancy, a 1967 Charlotte Memorial alumnus. Nancy went on to earn her BSN and MSN degrees and worked in public health for many years, where she was highly regarded as a knowledgeable resource, particularly in the communicable disease arena. Nancy and her husband Jim established this scholarship to assist aspiring students to obtain a Nursing education. 

Nell Nurkin Nursing Scholarship – This scholarship is in memory of Nell Webster Nurkin, mother of former Carolinas HealthCare System CEO Harry Nurkin.  It was endowed through the generous memorial contributions of her family and friends when she passed away. When possible, the scholarship is awarded to a nursing student who is a single parent, in tribute to Mrs. Nurkin’s years as a widow raising several children.

Nursing Advancement Scholarship – The Nursing Advancement Scholarship was provided by an anonymous donor to the Foundation to support nursing education. It is awarded to 2nd year students based on merit. 

Spaugh Scholarship – The Spaugh Scholarship is funded form the estate of Dr. Earle Spaugh, who passed away in 1995.  It is awarded annually to a nursing student whose father is a member of the clergy.

Special Needs Scholarship – This scholarship is anonymously funded by donors who desire to help CCHS students facing unusual life circumstances. 

Stack Scholarship – The Stack Scholarship is funded through a memorial endowment honoring the late Patty Stack, a former member of the CMC nursing staff by her devoted family and friends.

Stone Nursing Scholarship – Mr. Charles Stone was a long time friend and supporter of Carolinas HealthCare System.  This scholarship is made possible by an annual distribution of funds from the Charles Stone Charitable Trust, established in the 1960s following Mr. Stone’s death.

Susan Stricker Scholarship – This scholarship was established in honor of Susan Stricker upon her retirement as program director for the school of Radiologic Technology in 2007.  Susan graduated from the Charlotte Memorial Rad Tech program in 1960 and was the heart and soul of the program as it grew and developed over the years. Each of the current faculty of the program is a former students of hers, an indication of the loving care with which she has nurtured the program and its students, and of the tremendous respect those students have for her by the time they graduate.
